Two young South African entrepreneurs have been chosen as finalists in the Anzisha Prize for young African entrepreneurs competition.
The Anzisha Prize, now in its fourth year, is hosted by the African Leadership Academy and The MasterCard Foundation.
22-year-old Jeffrey Mulaudzi and 21-year-old Thato Kgatlhanye are among 12 other finalists selected from 339 applications across 32 countries for the Anzisha Prize. This year’s finalists have started ventures in a diverse range of economic sectors including energy, healthcare, tourism and hospitality.
Mulaudzi Bicycle Tours gives tourists a unique view of Joburg by putting them on cycles, taking them through the heart of Alexandra township and introducing them to locals steeped in the history of the area. It’s all about breaking down the unnecessary barriers between different economic groups we have in Gauteng (and South Africa as a whole) and aimed at both the physically and the ethically adventurous. Mulaudzi was a recent graduate of the MEDO program for entrepreneurs.
Kgatlhanye, meawhile, is the founder of Repurpose Schoolbags, an initiative that designs bags for learners made from up-cycled plastic shopping bags that integrate solar charging panels and lamps. So the bags charge up during the day while the kids are at school, and transform into lights they can study by after dark.
