Jumia launches in Cameroon

E-commerce site Jumia has launched in Cameroon, making the number of countries it is active in to nine.

Recently , the company launched in Ghana and Uganda while also expanding services to northern Nigeria.

The company said that its Cameroon launch marked the beginning of its expansion into Central Africa. Cameroon is Africa’s 13th largest economy, with a nominal gross domestic product (GDP) of US$26 billion and an economic growth rate of 4.7 per cent in 2011.

 

“Cameroonians therefore have a strong purchasing power, and are increasingly interested in consumer goods. Although internet penetration in the country is still low, it is growing largely thanks to the rise in smartphone use, meaning that now is an ideal time for online retail to establish itself,” Jumia said.

 

The managing director for new countries at Jumia, Christina Hawley said that this is another exciting step for Jumia.
